What Is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is defined as an unnatural curvature of the spine. In a normal spine, the vertebrae are each neatly stacked one on top of the other. In between each vertebra is a disc. This disc is made of soft tissue and acts as a cushion to keep the bones of the vertebrae from touching one another. The disc also helps to protect the sensitive nerves housed in the spinal column.

When scoliosis is present, these vertebrae are not arranged correctly. They are curved unnaturally and this, in turn, causes the discs in between to tilt.

This condition can result from a genetic defect or from a personal injury. It can also develop as people grow older.

What Are the Symptoms of Scoliosis?

The most common symptom of this condition is a curvature of the spine. This can cause a person to have trouble standing up straight and it can also cause them trouble sitting up straight. Scoliosis can also cause pain.

Scoliosis pain is caused by the discs of the spine tilting out and not properly cushioning the vertebrae and nerves. This pain may be like the pain experienced from a herniated disc.

Pain can also result from the muscles of the back and neck not working to compensate for the spine. This overuse of the back and neck muscles in this way may cause pain, stiffness, and loss of mobility.

How Can Our Chiropractor Help?

You can find scoliosis pain management with a chiropractor. Our team can provide treatments to help with the symptoms of this condition.

Spinal Adjustment- Spinal adjustment will be one of the most important types of treatment. This treatment will work toward straightening the spine over time. Spinal adjustment may help with scoliosis pain management.

Massage Therapy- Massage therapy will help to relieve the stiffness and tightness in the neck and back muscles.
